Some sessions just stay with you, and Ciana’s senior session at Abiqua Falls is absolutely one of them.
As a senior photographer based in Salem, I’m always chasing locations that feel a little wild, a little magical—and this one delivered in every possible way.
A Warm Spring Day in Oregon (Yes, Really!)
Ciana’s session took place in April, and somehow we lucked out with one of those rare Oregon days that feels like a gift—warm, sunny, and glowing in the best way.
We started in the forest, surrounded by towering fir trees, and I’m not exaggerating when I say it felt like we stepped into a fairytale. The way the sunlight filtered through the branches created this soft, dreamy glow that wrapped around everything. It was giving fairy vibes in the best way.
Ciana wore the cutest polka dot shirt paired with overalls, and later changed into a simple white skirt—both outfits felt effortless and perfectly matched the natural setting. We used both looks in each location, which gave her gallery so much variety while still feeling cohesive.
The Drive Down to Abiqua Falls – Hold On Tight!
Now, getting to Abiqua Falls is part of the adventure—and honestly, part of what makes it so special.
The road down is no joke. You absolutely need 4WD to make it safely, and this is where I love being able to offer something extra to my seniors. Since I have a 4WD vehicle, I can drive my clients all the way down to the trailhead.
If you don’t have that capability, you’re looking at adding about two extra miles to your hike—which can make a big difference, especially when you’re already planning for the trail itself.
The drive itself? SO fun. There were multiple “woah!!” moments as we made our way down—bumpy, a little wild, and full of laughter. It instantly set the tone for the adventure we were about to have.
The Hike: Short, But Mighty
Let’s talk about the hike—because while it’s not long, it definitely earns its reputation.
The trail down to the falls is steep and intense in sections, with ropes to help guide you safely down (and back up at the end). It’s one of those hikes where you feel accomplished when you reach the bottom.
And here’s the part that made this session even more special: this was Ciana’s very first hike.
Getting to witness that experience—her excitement, a little bit of nerves, and ultimately that sense of “I did it”—was something I’ll never forget. I felt so honored to be a part of that moment in her life.
Waterfall Magic & Golden Light
And then… you see it.
Abiqua Falls in April is truly something else. The water flow is strong this time of year, cascading down the basalt cliffs in the most dramatic, beautiful way. The air is filled with this soft mist, and when the sunlight hits it just right, it creates this glowing, magical spray that feels almost unreal.
It’s one of those places that makes you stop for a second and just take it all in.
We explored around the base of the falls, capturing both of Ciana’s outfits in this incredible setting. And for the final moments of the session, she stepped into the water in her white skirt—braving the cold like an absolute champ.
The hem of her skirt caught the water, adding this soft, organic movement that elevated the entire scene. It was the perfect ending—adventurous, a little bold, and completely unforgettable.
Why I Love Adventure Senior Sessions
Sessions like this are exactly why I do what I do. It’s not just about the photos (although, let’s be honest—they’re stunning). It’s about the experience. The laughter on the drive, the challenge of the hike, the quiet moments in nature, and the confidence that comes from doing something new.
Ciana didn’t just show up for photos—she showed up for an adventure. And that’s what made her session so meaningful.
