When I ask someone what is the most important thing in their life, the most common answer is Family!
I usually follow up with a question around when the last time you had your family captured and why you are waiting. There are some general categories for the "why", but the answer I get the most is around waiting for the perfect time. You know what I'm talking about...I need to lose some weight, it's the wrong season, little Jane/Johnny broke their arm...I could go on and on. I used to think these same things, that is until my Mom was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer and passed away within 6 months. That was five years ago and I can tell you that I look at those photos daily. I don't see the weight I wanted to lose, or that my kiddo needed a haircut, or that our outfits weren't perfect. I see what was important-love, connection and family. I am so grateful that we captured those memories.
It is important to capture who you are right now, in this moment, because people who love you-they love who you are right now. They love and see beyond your imperfections. Maybe it's time to give yourself some grace and allow for those imperfections? In the name of Family!!
Don't stress over your session. We meet ahead of time to discuss your family dynamics and what will make your session perfect. Don't worry about the details-that's my job! Your job is to get everyone dressed (we talk about outfit ideas at your consult), show up on time and be prepared for fun! Enjoy the moment and focus on the "why" you are having your photos done. I give you permission to give Stress the day off. No matter what happens, embrace it and I guarantee you will look at your photos with the same love and enjoyment as I look at mine.
What brings my heart such joy is capturing those moments of joy with families. Not everyone is looking at the camera, they are looking at each other and letting those true personalities shine!
And of course we also capture some of the classics.
So the point is don't let insecurities keep you from documenting your family. But do pick someone who will help you be comfortable and have fun (like me!)
